The nursing profession gives abundant opportunities to candidates to work in different countries with high salaries. Nurses will not have a lack of opportunities for a long time. In the post-covid world, every government is investing health care of its citizens. It is fairly easy to get citizenship or Permanent Residency in any country of the world. Nursing also becomes attractive because it is comparatively cheaper to study nursing.
There are various courses available in nursing. Following are the main ones:
ANM is the basic recognized course that you can join. You need to pass 10+2 with at least 40% marks in any stream (Arts or Science). This is an 18 months course. Only females are given admission to this course.
This course is discontinued from 2021 onwards. However, those who are pursuing GNM currently (who have joined before 2021) may complete it and will be recognized as trained nursing professionals by institutions.
It is a graduate-level course. B.Sc Nursing can be done from any institute recognized by Indian Nursing Council or any state Nursing Council. It is a 4 year program. The basic required qualification is 10+2 with a minimum of 50% in the Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). Both males and females can join the course.
Candidates who have done GNM may upgrade themselves as a B.Sc nurse if they do this course. Post Basic is for 2 years. It is offered by many reputed hospitals such as AIIMS.
B.Sc Nurses can upgrade themselves with M.Sc Nursing. This may open new avenues into Nursing colleges as Lecturers.
The admission process is not centralized in the whole country. It can be on
Government institutes generally conduct entrance exams to select candidates. You may apply to any government nursing institutes in the online mode and write the exam. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University)
Some of the famous institutes are AIIMS, Delhi, Christian Medical Institute (Vellore and Ludhiana), Madras Medical College, Chennai, etc.
Nursing education is comparatively cheaper compared to other courses. But it can vary from college to college. Institutes such as AIIMS, Delhi charges negligible charges for the 4 years of study. But it can cost anywhere between 50,000 to 1,50,000 in various institutes.
A nursing graduate may apply as a fresher in any hospital across the country after completing the registration process with State Nursing Council or Indian Nursing Council. If you register with a State Nursing Council, you may have to change the registration to a state where your employment is located (only some hospitals require it).
Hospitals such as AIIMS, Medical Colleges, State Hospitals, Railway Hospitals, Defense Hospitals, ESI Hospitals, etc. give ample job opportunities in the Government sector for nurses. There are plenty of opportunities to go abroad as a nurse. Candidates may have to write exams such as IELTS, OET, RN, etc to go abroad for work. Countries such as Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Singapore, the US, etc are in constant demand of nurses. The US offers Green Card to nursing professionals right from the beginning of their career in their country.
Currently, B.Sc Nurses and GNM are offered the same salary in hospitals. Central Government gives a small extra amount to B.Sc Nurses. Fresh nursing professionals are given 15000- 25000 in Indian cities by private hospitals. But if you get accepted in a Central Government hospital such as AIIMS, your salary would start from 65,000. Central Government hospitals offer salaries based on the 7th Pay Commission. Many of the state government hospitals also offer a similar salary.
ANM gets 25000 to 50000 if they get a good placement. However, ANM job opportunities are limited in India and abroad.
UK hospitals offer around 24,000 Sterling Pound (UK currency) per annum to GNM and B.Sc Nurses. This would come to around 24,00,000 rupees. US hospitals offer around 34 to 45 USD per hour for nurses (around 4 Lakh rupees per month).
