As part of the Ayushman Bharat initiative of the Indian Government CHO (COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER) is a new cadre non-physician health worker, who works in the rural health mission (NHM). They are trained health care providers who have a defined scope of practice. Only Nursing and AYUSH practitioners are eligible for this cadre. B.Sc Nurses or candidates who have completed Post Basic B.Sc can directly apply to be a CHO (COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER). GNM and ANM can join a certification course of 6 months on Community nursing from the prescribed institutions and can apply for becoming a CHO (COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER). In the six months of training, the candidates will be taught community medicine with practical experience in various departments of the hospitals. They are given Rupees 10,000 as a stipend during the 6 months of training.

CHO (COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER)s are appointed in Primary Health Centres (PHC) at the village level, Block level, or District level. A person becomes eligible for the next level after a certain number of years (in some states 6 years). CHO (COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER) coordinates other health workers in their center such as ASHA workers. They also maintain Meeting Proceeding Register with these workers. They attend regular checkups of pregnant women and involve in their health education, conduct immunization drives, and provide ANC. Government offers attractive incentives (cash) based on the number of people they attend in various levels (up to 15,000 initially).
